Random Rambling: More Political Commentary

Another thing I noticed about the VP debate: They spent half of it on “foreign policy issues”, which basically meant Iraq. The media seems to spend a lot of time on it, which may be part of the reason it seems that many people care about it. However, the war just isn’t that big an issue to me. Perhaps it’s a little naïve of me, but I have faith that our government and military is doing the best they can. I think that they know what they’re doing.

Much more important to me are domestic moral issues, like stopping abortion, stem-cell research, and gay marriage. I was disappointed that they weren’t covered much in the debate.

(Then again, it probably doesn’t make for good television: One person says they support one thing, and other says they oppose it, and that’s just about it. They’re not going to convince any undecided person of anything by arguing about it. Those who care about those issues can look up the candidates’ opinions fairly easily.)

But maybe I’m just a part of the moral minority.

  1. Yeay, so your favorite President has invaded a technically sovereign nation, and you “don’t care”?

  2. The abortion issue is a dead horse. Beating it anymore is an exercise in futility. The law on the subject hasn’t changed in the 20 or so years since Roe v. Wade was decided. So unless 3/4 of the states vote to give the US Constitution an anti-abortion amendment, it’s a non-starter of an issue politically.
I am quite suprised that stem-cell research wasn’t covered. you got me on that one.
They did address gay marriage. Cheney is on record as having the exact same view Kerry and Edwards have. So there wasn’t anything to debate.

  3. I don’t saying I “don’t care”, just that it’s not that big an issue. I think that they made the best decisions they could with the information that they had available.

Perhaps if the US had perfect knowledge of everything else happening in the world, our leaders would have made different decisions. But that’s a rather pointless and silly hypothetical.

As it is, I have faith and confidence in our leaders to do the best job they can. It can’t be easy to make these decisions, and I know that they don’t make then lightly.

  4. Right. I guess that that’s what I was pointing to when I said it wasn’t interesting television, and that those who care can look up the candidates’ positions.
