Political Asperation & Home Network Update

Peter Cooper Jr.

I’ve decided not to run for Town Moderator. I don’t want to run as a write-in candidate against somebody who’d I’d be happy to have in there.

In other news, I drew a network diagram today, just to make sure I knew what IPs were where in our increasingly-complicated home network. (The router for VoIP adds another layer of NATing, and there’s now the cable-modem-to-phone-router subnet, the phone-router-to-PCPC subnet, and the main home subnet.)

House Building Update

Here’s the news from my mom:

Dad called to find out about your building permit. He was told it was
not ready, and it has a date stamp of March 4th (even though he has a
receipt dated February 7th). The building inspector had some kind of
accident and broke his ribs, so they don’t know when he’ll be back at
work. Dad tried to call the builder, to see if he can push something
along, since there is a part-time associate building inspector, but
there was no answer. The good news is, your address is 194 Berry
Corner Road.

Yesterday, Jessi and I signed many many documents saying that we promise to pay back the money that the bank will be lending us. Now I know why they call it Legal sized paper.

While I haven’t gotten around to scanning in the full building plans, we received the appraisal from the bank’s appraiser today and it included a simplified floor plan drawing. I scanned it in case anyone wanted to see it. (And if you want to see the full plans, come over sometime.)

Upcoming plans

Tonight, I’m running another Standard Constructed Magic tournament at Card Stop.

Friday, I get to join millions of Americans by acquiring oodles of debt! We’re doing the closing on our mortgage.

Over the next couple weeks, we’re having various people over for meals, and occasionally going to someone else’s place for a meal. You may be able to be one of those people if you contact us.

April 1st through the 3rd is SFS Gaming Weekend, which I’m looking forward to. I’m also planning on running another tournament there.

Happy Government Bureaucracy Update

Peter Cooper Jr.

Just got this email from my mom:

Dad got a call from the Planning Board chairman, John. John and the
Planning Director talked with the highway foreman about the driveway
permit. They have reached some kind of agreement so the permit will
be signed, and the process for a building permit will continue.

Happiness!

Oh, and in other house-building-related news, we’re closing on our mortgage Friday.

Government Bureaucracy Update

First of all, if you haven’t checked out Google Maps yet, I suggest that you do so. It’s very nifty. Its only downside is that it doesn’t support Opera yet, but I’m sure it will eventually.

If you look at the area surrounding our future house with most mapping services, including Google’s, you will see that Berry Corner Rd. comes southwest past Ten Schoolhouse Rd., and then curves around onto Ayers Rd. That curve is where my parents’ driveway ends. What you do not see on that map is that Berry Corner Rd. continues, eventually connecting (and ending) at Mcgilpin Rd. in Sturbridge. You do not see it on that map because the road has never been paved, and has not been maintained in any way for a Very Long Time. It is on this segment of Berry Corner Rd. that our house will be built on. Apparently, most maps have forgotten that it exists.

Random Post

Peter Cooper Jr.

I feel like it’s been a while since my last post, and I want to post something, but I’m not sure what. So, random disconnected thoughts follow.

I’m judging at Magic’s Grand Prix Boston this weekend (and I got confirmation today that I will in fact be judging this event). I’m very excited.

Hopefully, we’ll be meeting with our builder next week to go over the house project and put together a contract, or at the very least start the building permit application.

House building and well drilling update

Peter Cooper Jr.

The bad news: We’re getting only 2 gallons per minute from our well.
The good news: That’s good enough since it’s 500 feet down. There will be roughly 600 gallons sitting in the well, which should be a good enough reserve for us even if it replenishes relatively slowly.

So, the well-drilling people are going to sign the water-is-okay form, which was the last thing blocking our building permit. Assuming we get that okay (and it may take a month or so), then we can start construction in the spring, right on time.

The well-digging has gone down 500 feet, and they haven’t hit enough water yet. Sometime soon (possibly today), they’re going to try “fracturing” it, where they seal it off and pump in a bunch of water to cause oodles and oodles of pressure (on the order of 1000 to 2000 p.s.i.). It’s my understanding that hopefully this will create more fractures and connect the well to nearby underground streams. Hopefully, it won’t damage my parents’ well in the process.

Got this from my mom today:

The well people came today and got started at about noon. They went down about 120 feet. No water yet. They’ll be back tomorrow to drill some more.

More happiness and excitement!
