Housebuilding

Life Update

Peter Cooper Jr.

The house is continuing to come along, slowly but surely. The carpets are in, the wood floors are being finished, and the appliances should be arriving early next week. This weekend, we’ll be moving in many things from my parents’ garage. Some things will probably be in their actual location, but many things will likely end up being in our garage.

Also this weekend is Charlton Baptist Church’s Free Market. Jessi and I will be helping out there. Stop by there in the morning, say hello, and pick up something free.

House Building Update

Peter Cooper Jr.

Yesterday: Carpets were installed.
Today: Electricity is supposed to be hooked up.
Tomorrow: Linoleum is supposed to be installed.
Friday or early next week: Sanding of wood floors, and installation of appliances.

Looks like things might be moving again. Maybe.

Al…most… there…

Peter Cooper Jr.

The phone company managed to put in one pole today (Horray!), but they still need to replace the one across the street that will connect to it.

But some progress has been made, at least.

Carpeting/Linoleum should be arriving this week. Finishing up the wood flooring is blocked on getting power. (Apparently the extension cord to my parents’ house isn’t enough for powering their big sanding machines, or something.)

House Building Update

Latest Estimates:

  • Utility pole: Friday
  • Linoleum: Next week
  • Carpeting: The following week

The accuracy of these estimates is unknown.

The quality of service from companies based in Charlton has been wonderful. The quality of service from companies not based in Charlton has been awful.

We’ve got a floor

Peter Cooper Jr.

The vast vast majority of the oak flooring for the kitchen/dining/living room is in and nailed down.

Still no word from the phone company. Interestingly enough, they seem to not return phone calls. Seems like a silly thing for a phone company to me.

Gigabit Happiness

Peter Cooper Jr.

Today I received my Dell PowerConnect 2716 that I ordered this weekend. It’s a 16-port gigabit switch and supports web management, cable testing, port mirroring, link aggregation, VLANs, QoS, and some acronyms that I don’t recognize. It’ll be the backbone of our home network once our house is done.

House building update

The inside is mostly (if not all) painted and stained, and the doors, moulding, stairs, and walls all look wonderful.

The septic system is now in, and our front yard has been leveled to about the configuration it will end up in. They’ve also started reconfiguring the side yard by the stream, making the stream more visible from the porch.

The carpeting people are supposed to measure things this week, although I don’t know if they already have. The kitchen countertops should be arriving sometime soon as well.

House Building Update

We now have a large hole in our front yard. It looks like the septic tank itself is there, although there’s still a lot of room dug up for the drain field that is yet to be put in. (I think they need an inspection from the town before they can put that in and cover everything up.)

Most of the woodwork (stairs, doors, moulding around doors and windows) has been stained to match the cabinets. They look really nice.

Let there be Light!

Peter Cooper Jr.

The light fixtures are now installed in our house, and the ones that we’ve installed light bulbs in work! While we don’t have utilities actually hooked up yet (and may not for 6–8 weeks), the house is currently powered via an extension cord from my parents’ house.
