Unexpected Letter

Letter received today from the Charlton Town Clerk’s office (with the official embossed seal and everything):

This is to certify that Peter Cooper Jr.
Was duly elected to the REPUBLICAN TOWN COMMITTEE
at the 2008 Presidential Primary held February 5, 2008 at the
Heritage School, 34 Oxford Road, Charlton.

Please appear at the Town Clerk’s Office to be sworn into office at your earliest convenience

Jessi wrote me in on one of the 35 blank lines for Town Committee, and apparently that was enough.

Now I just need to figure out what the Town Committee does, when they meet, and if there are any other members.

  1. Wow. Involuntarily write-in election. I’ve always known it could happen, but you never think its going to happen to somebody you know….

  2. Like I said, I don’t even know what they do or if there are any other members.

But you can go with “Mr. Cooper” for now if it makes you feel better. :)

  3. You’re probably aware, but for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know…
This isn’t a town committee that happens to consist of Republicans. This committee is an agent of the GOP that happens to work at the town level.

I think you’re responsible for drumming up good candidates, bringing vitality to the Republican party in Charlton, and hosting Republican fund raisers. Considering that your ballot had no established committee group, it sounds like an uphill battle. There’s probably a charter somewhere that’ll give you guidance, but it’s also possible you’re working from the ground up with only party-level guidelines.

  4. Possibly. There’s a county club that seems to be more local than the state level, and may help.

And Charlton did have the highest percentage of votes for Bush in 2004, and voted for a Republican state rep. in 2006, so it might not be completely uphill.

But yes, it’s also possible I’m the only member. I may call the Town Clerk’s office today and see what I can find out.
