Scary quote of the day

“Okay, your password has been reset to ‘password2’.” — The customer service rep. at my bank, after calling them, telling them that my account on their web site was inactive due to me mistyping my password too many times, and telling them my name.

There was no verification beyond me telling them my name.

More about the false sense of security when logging into my bank in the next update…

  1. They might have silently compared your phone number to the one on record, giving a little security.

  2. Unlikely, as I was calling from work, and that comes through (on all CallerID systems that I’m aware of at least), as a private number. Even if an actual number did show up (since one is presumably somewhere for emergency services), I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t match anything on my account.
