Nomic is Fun!

I spent a good chunk of Saturday playing B Nomic, which I’ve been involved with since about the start of the year. For those who haven’t heard me rant and rave about the wonders of Nomics, they’re a type of game, where the gameplay centers around changing how the game is played. You can propose just about any change to the game, which can make for interesting contradictions where you want to vote for a change that you don’t want, or sometimes the game just completely crashes. Usually though, it’s just a fun Internet community where you keep on changing what it is that you’re trying to do.

Some of my major accomplishments on Saturday were proposing transactional support and proposing turning voting into a math equation.

I know that not many people besides me really care, but I’m excited about the game. I like messing with the rules of systems. And if it sounds somewhat interesting to you, too, you should check it (or another Nomic) out and join in the fun!

  1. A quick reading of the main rules document revealed some oddities:
    1) There does not appear to currently be any way to win.
    2) The Watch is not used for anything.

Perhaps there are other rules documents that fix that?

  2. wow. this looks interesting. I am currently reading up the rules but there are a lot of them. How long did it take you and warren to get through all that ?

  3. The goal of the game is to edit the rules such that you win. This is tough to do, although I did it once, about a day before the current Overlord (DQT) managed to do so.

The Watch is not used for anything, but it can be helpful to know how long the Clock has been turned off.

  4. Well, there are a lot of details that you don’t need to pay attention to… The basics are all in section 1 through 3, and there’s some useful stuff in section 9, but the others you don’t really have to read through and understand fully (but might still want to glance at) in order to understand the current state of the game.

It’s also easier when you’re involved with the changes… We reset the game to a very simple set of rules on 4/12, and have been slowly adding things in there. And we try to delete things not used much every once in a while.
