  1. Well, replacing the network card seems to have done the trick for now.

But it’s very odd to have lots of “Network cable unplugged” messages, along with it failing to send packets to other systems even when it does say that the cable’s plugged in.

  2. When the hardware is giving the computer confusing and contradictory messages, the computer wants to share the experience with its user, and gives him confusing and contradictory messages.

  3. So it would seem.

Changing the network card didn’t seem to fix the problem long-term… Neither did changing the port on the switch that I’m plugged into. I’m trying replacing a wire, but the network testing shows them working.

It seems to only be under heavy load, and then kills my network connection until I reboot. It might be a local-system thing, although I have no idea what.

  4. I move to invalidate your opinion with the following evidence, which I deem, Exhibit A, after the great Exhibits of Old, which roamed the great courtrooms of

  5. Might I suggest that there may be a driver mismatch on the replace card, especially if you’re using 3Com cards, noted throughout the known galaxy to exhibit strange behavior when using a slightly different driver than they are supposed to work with.

  6. Evidence accepted, but motion not approved. You see, proving that I am weird does not invalidate your own weirdness.

  7. Well, the new card has exactly the same symptoms as the on-board network port, so I don’t think that it’s a driver issue. (Although they *are* both 3COM, Windows 2000 detected the new card and gave it a driver without hesitation. And who am I to argue with WHQL? :)

  8. A clever ploy, nameless character. You may have vanquished my reasoning for now, but I shall return, and smite you with Holy Logic!
