Life today

Today I went to work & class with nothing particularly exciting. Checkerboard is starting a “company-wide goals initiative”, which seems well-intentioned but has what looks to me to be some suboptimal implementations.

After class, we had over for a supper of delicious calzones. I unfortunately wasn’t very hungry, but I expect to have my leftovers for lunch tomorrow. We went to the Campus Center for some games and hanging out.

Hopefully, I will make a lot of progress on my research project tomorrow. But now, I am tired, so I’m going to do the logical thing and go to bed.

How am I supposed to know where to be if my computer doesn’t tell me?

Well, and I have started to realize that we may need a PDA or something to keep track of all the various things that we’re doing. We’re very busy people, and it’s difficult to keep our calendar updated, and our calendar is home when we are not. Plus, a PDA can beep to tell us to go somewhere.

So, does anyone have any particular suggestions for brands or models? I’m not quite sure exactly what our requirements are yet, but any and all information & resources that people might have would be useful.

And now, back to my regularly scheduled homeworking…

¿

So, it seems like some other people have posted asking the audience for questions to answer. Perhaps this is how people deal with what I perceive to be another of the suboptimal features in LJ—there’s no way for a visitor to start a conversation topic on “my” page… Visitors can only comment on what I’ve started.

Or maybe it’s just a way to have something to do when bored or procrastinating.

In any event, feel free to post and ask me any number of questions, about anything. I’ll do my best to answer them. Or just randomly say “Hello”, if you can’t think of something to ask.

Bad Research

I’ve just discovered part of why my research hasn’t been working well: If I pass the “-debug” flag to the simulator I’m using, I get drastically different waveforms than when I don’t.

Yes, trying to get more information from the simulator breaks things. Heisenberg at work, I suppose.

Naps are good

After lunch, I took a nap for a few hours instead of doing my homework.

Naps are good. I needed that.

is now on a quest for hamburger buns so we can have Salmon-burgers for supper.

Maybe I’ll be able to get some homework done after supper…

Nothing much to report

After posting several times yesterday while learning about this thing, I find I have little to talk about today.

Went to Costa Rica Team meeting. We’ll be working at the PIP Shelter on May 8 as a team-building activity.

QOTD:
~@pcpc$ fortune
Why bother building any more nuclear warheads until we use the ones we have?

The plan for today is to do muchness of homeworkness. But first, it is time for lunch.

Random Rambling: The glorious days of ICQ

When I asked “Why LJ” in ‘s journal, posted an ancedote about ICQ. It got me thinking about years and years ago, when most people hadn’t even heard of the Internet. I was on ICQ then. I went to ICQ’s web site today and saw ICQ ID numbers in the 9 digits. When I was on ICQ, my number was 6 digits. I’m fairly certain that the first digit was a 1 or 2.

When AOL bought ICQ (June 1998 (Source)), I decided that AOL was probably gonna ruin it, so I deleted my account. Anyone I wanted to chat with was on IRC if they were on anyway (this was before I could know a person both in real life and online, with the possible exception of my friend Pat).

I stopped using IRC when I came to the Academy, and my social life changed dramatically.

Later, I succumbed and got an AIM account, as it was the easiest way to chat with . Although she and I used talk quite a bit at times. Of course, WPI had a modem bank for her to use then.

My, how times change…

I just finished supper and will be heading to the Wedge shortly.

Edit: add to list of annoyances that the time posted is time started working on the entry, not time entry finished and posted

LJ Interface woes

Well, I know that I haven’t been using this for very long, but I already think that their interface is suboptimal.

  • While the Friends List aggregates people’s posts, it doesn’t do a good job of showing me what entries and comments are not yet read… I have to wade through the list to find what might interest me, and if there are any unread comments.
  • I want some connection between comments I leave on other people’s pages and on my entries here… I reply to something somewhere else that made me think of something, but I kinda want to crosspost it to a journal entry as it’s of general interest and what I am thinking at the time. Plus, if I have something to say in a comment somewhere, there’s a possibility that it won’t really get seen by people who don’t check the comments pages of my friends. Something just seems off here, and I’m not really sure what it is or what the solution is.
  • There’s no link from my journal for me to post to it.
  • The spell checker doesn’t understand contractions
  • Journal entries display local time (Eastern); comments display server time (Pacific).
  • There’s no preview-post feature for journal entries, although there is for comments
  • Web pages are not valid HTML (just a minor pet peeve)
  • And that’s just what I’ve found in half a day.

I want things to work more like my mail/newsreader, where only unread messages are seen, and threaded, and all my inbound communications is in one place.

Perhaps for some of these issues I simply don’t have the settings here set to what I want… Please let me know how others deal with these kinds of things or what bits I need to flip where.

In other news, tentative plan for this evening is to head over to the Wedge for the weekly Friday Night Wedge Gaming.
